Bunions

• Adductor Hallucis (transverse head)
• Adductor Hallucis (oblique head)
• Flexor Hallucis Brevis
• Abductor Hallucis

 

The 1st metatarsal is fixed in abduction (away from the 2nd metatarsal), and the hallux is subluxated laterally. The Abductor Hallucis has become displaced laterally beneath the metatarsal head, and it is therefore ineffectual in maintaining abduction.

(Note Bunionette) enlargement of the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal head; also called "tailors bunion".

 

An abnormal prominence of the inner aspect of the first metatarsal head, which is accompanied by bursal formation and resulting in a lateral or valgus displacement of the "great toe".

 

TREATMENT



• Manipulation of involved biomechanical subluxations, with emphasis on the hallux.
• Strengthen ankle, knee, and hip.
• FirmFlex Plus orthotics.
• Long-standing cases may require surgery.
